Exports of wood, pepper, seafood, and cashew nuts to the US increased by 26-96% in the first 9 months of the year.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 10 months, the total export turnover of the agricultural sector reached nearly 52 billion USD, up 20% over the same period last year.
The US is Vietnam’s largest agricultural, forestry and fishery import market, accounting for 92% of export turnover to this continent. The group of wood and wood products continues to play a key role, with export turnover to the US in September reaching 6.5 billion USD, up 26% over the same period last year.
Mr. Nguyen Chanh Phuong, Vice President and General Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Handicraft and Wood Processing Association (HAWA), said that the US is the largest market for Vietnamese wood, playing an important role in leading industry growth. “Thanks to the recovery of construction and real estate in the US, demand for ‘made in Vietnam’ furniture increased, opening up many opportunities for the industry,” he said.
Similarly, Vietnam’s seafood exports also recovered strongly. In 9 months, goods to the US reached nearly 1.4 billion USD, an increase of more than 14% over the same period in 2023.
Not only wood and seafood, other agricultural products such as cashew nuts, pepper and vegetables also contribute significantly to total export turnover.
In the first 9 months of the year, cashew export turnover was more than 871 million USD, an increase of 33%; Pepper reached 300 million USD, an increase of 96%. This strong growth was also recorded in fruit and vegetable products, with export turnover of more than 254 million USD, an increase of 35%.
Exports to the US grew positively, but Mr. Nguyen Chanh Phuong also warned of challenges when Mr. Donald Trump is re-elected. Because in his previous term, his administration investigated anti-dumping and applied control measures on some products from Vietnam. If this happens again, the wood and fisheries industries need to prepare carefully to respond to new trade barriers.
However, with the strong recovery of consumer demand in the US, businesses can take advantage of opportunities to increase exports. Currently, the country also exports a lot of raw wood to Vietnam and businesses maintain close relationships with American suppliers.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development believes that, with preparation and flexible adaptability, Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector can fully take advantage of new trends and continue to develop steadily. in the near future.
