Vietnam’s Rice Export Expected to Rise in 2026

Published on 02.03.26

Vietnam’s rice export sector continues to affirm its strategic role in global food supply chains. According to recent projections, Vietnam is expected to export approximately 7.73 million tons of rice in 2026, reinforcing its position among the world’s leading rice exporters. Beyond volume growth, the structure of rice export is also shifting toward higher value segments, signaling a transformation in both production strategy and market positioning.

VietNam’s Rice Export Volume and Market Positioning

The projected 7.73 million tons demonstrates stable production capacity and strong international demand. The Mekong Delta remains the primary production hub. Farmers in this region benefit from favorable natural conditions and improved cultivation techniques.

Asia and Africa continue to lead as major import markets. China and the Philippines rank among the key buyers of Vietnamese rice. Meanwhile, African markets help diversify export destinations.

By expanding across multiple regions, Vietnam reduces market risks. This strategy also strengthens the country’s global competitiveness in rice exports.

Structural Shift Toward High-Quality Rice Export

One of the most notable aspects of Vietnam’s rice export strategy is the dominance of high-quality and fragrant rice. This segment is expected to account for approximately 75% of total export volume, equivalent to around 5.8 million tons. Such a shift demonstrates Vietnam’s transition from volume-based competition to value-based competition.

Meanwhile, glutinous rice is projected to represent about 10% (approximately 0.77 million tons), and rice for processing is expected to account for around 15% (about 1.16 million tons). This diversified export structure enhances flexibility and allows exporters to respond more effectively to different market demands.

The increasing focus on premium rice varieties also aligns with global consumption trends, where consumers are demanding higher quality, traceability, and sustainable production standards.

Looking ahead to 2026, Vietnam’s rice export outlook reflects both quantitative growth and qualitative transformation. With a projected 7.73 million tons and a strong emphasis on high-value segments, Vietnam is reinforcing its position not only as a major rice supplier but also as a premium rice exporter in the global market.
