Hoa, a farmer in Kon Tum, a major growing province in the Central Highlands, sold her entire harvest from late last year when prices peaked, raking in more than VND810 million per hectare.

“[Unlike last year] I patiently waited for higher prices and my profits skyrocketed.”

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment shows Vietnam exported 284,000 tons of coffee beans for US$1.58 billion in the first two months of 2025, down 28.4% year-on-year in volume but 26.2% up in value.

Around $1.08 billion worth was shipped in February alone, a record high for the month, as export prices reached a historic peak of $5,821 per ton on Feb. 13.

Nguyen Nam Hai, chairman of the Vietnam Coffee – Cocoa Association, said prices have been soaring due to geopolitical factors and global supply shortages driven by climate change.

Many farmers are holding onto their stocks and waiting for prices to rise further as Arabica production in Brazil, the world’s leading producer, has also been hit by bad weather, he said.

Prices are expected to keep rising until July, when that country begins its main harvest, he said.

According to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, the La Niña weather pattern is expected to replace El Niño this year, potentially causing frost that could severely impact coffee production in both Vietnam and Brazil.

In early January frost wreaked havoc on large coffee farms in the northwestern Son La Province.

If effective strategies are adopted, coffee exports could surpass $6 billion and even reach $7 billion in 2025, they said.

Last year Vietnam exported around 1.35 million tons of coffee for a record $5.62 billion, down in volume from 2023 but a 32.5% increase in value.
