Growing Demand for Vietnam’s Rice and Materials

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính met Peter Shanel Agovaka, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of the Solomon Islands, during his visit to Vietnam from November 11 to 13, 2025. During the meeting, the Solomon Islands expressed a clear intention to import rice and essential materials from Vietnam, marking a new step toward deeper bilateral trade cooperation.

Expanding Trade, Import Activities, and Investment Opportunities

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính affirmed that Vietnam is ready to promote practical cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, renewable energy, import-export activities, and infrastructure development.

The meeting also opened opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to explore investment projects in the Solomon Islands. Sectors such as seafood processing, fisheries development, agro-processing, and energy were highlighted as areas with long-term potential. Establishing processing facilities in the Solomon Islands could help enhance local value chains and expand export markets.

The focus on import activities, especially the import of rice and materials from Vietnam, demonstrates the Solomon Islands’ need for stable and high-quality supply sources to support both consumption and industrial development.

Enhancing Connectivity and Bilateral Agreements

To facilitate smoother cooperation, both countries agreed to accelerate the signing of bilateral agreements, including:

• Visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders
• Strengthening institutional cooperation
• Expanding air routes between Vietnam and Pacific Island countries

Better connectivity will help boost import-export flows, support business operations, and create momentum for more sustainable economic cooperation.

A Stronger, Long-Term Vietnam–Solomon Islands Partnership

The Solomon Islands’ growing interest in importing goods from Vietnam highlights the expanding role of Vietnam in regional supply chains. With its competitive agricultural and industrial sectors, Vietnam is positioned to meet the Solomon Islands’ rising demand for rice, materials, and other essential goods.

Both countries also reaffirmed their intention to cooperate closely at international and regional forums, including the United Nations and frameworks between ASEAN and the PacifiIslands Forum (PIF).

The Solomon Islands’ plan to import rice and materials from Vietnam not only strengthens trade relations but also opens the door for broader cooperation in training, technology, investment, and sustainable development.

As both nations continue building momentum after this high-level meeting, their partnership is expected to grow more practical, effective, and beneficial-especially through expanded import-driven trade activities in the years ahead.
