Lien Chieu Port: Da Nang’s $1.8 Billion Mega-Project

Published on 14.04.26

Da Nang has officially triggered a 45,000 billion VND maritime revolution. By completing its shared infrastructure and launching a massive container terminal, Lien Chieu Port is set to become the ultimate “Green Port.” Consequently, this high-tech gateway will soon drive global trade in Central Vietnam.

March 28, 2026, marked a historic milestone for Central Vietnam’s infrastructure. On this day, the Da Nang City People’s Committee announced the completion of the shared infrastructure for Lien Chieu Port. Furthermore, they launched a massive 45,000 billion VND (approx. $1.8 billion) container terminal project. This bold initiative aims to transform Da Nang into a premier international transshipment hub.

What is Lien Chieu Port?

Lien Chieu Port sits at the foot of the iconic Hai Van Pass in Northwest Da Nang. Specifically, engineers designed it to be the primary gateway for international trade in the region. Currently, the existing Tien Sa Port is nearing its full capacity. Therefore, Tien Sa will transition toward tourism while Lien Chieu handles the heavy-duty maritime workload of the future.

  1. Total Investment: Over 45,268 billion VND.
  2. Key Investors: A consortium including Hateco Group, Hateco Port, and APM Terminals BV (Netherlands).
  3. Vision: To become a “Special Grade” seaport that meets international “Green Port” standards.

Completion of shared infrastructure

Workers have successfully laid the foundation for this mega-port. After more than 1,200 days of intensive construction, the city has finished the shared infrastructure. This phase cost over 3,426 billion VND from the state budget.

Key Infrastructure Highlights:

  1. Breakwater & Seawall: A 1,170-meter-long structure designed to protect the harbor from heavy waves and storms, ensuring year-round operations.
  2. Shipping Channel: A 7.3 km-long and 160 m-wide channel, dredged to accommodate massive international vessels.
  3. Strategic Road Connectivity: A dedicated 6-lane coastal road costing 1,200 billion VND. This road features modern overpasses and underpasses, linking Lien Chieu Port directly to the national highway and expressway network.

Building on the finished infrastructure, Da Nang has officially greenlit the container terminal phase. This phase represents the “heart” of the port’s commercial operations.

The project includes the construction of 8 modern container berths. Once Phase 1 is operational (expected within 3 years), the port aims for a staggering throughput of 4 million TEUs per year. This capacity will place Da Nang among the elite port cities in Southeast Asia.

The Da Nang government and investors are committed to building Lien Chieu Port as a sustainable facility:

  1. Advanced Technology: Utilizing automated cranes and AI-driven logistics management.
  2. Environmental Standards: Adopting “Green Port” criteria to minimize carbon footprints and protect the marine ecosystem of Da Nang Bay.
  3. Efficiency: Partnering with APM Terminals (one of the world’s leading terminal operators) ensures world-class operational efficiency.

Economic impact and future outlook

Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee, Pham Duc An, emphasized that the city is finalizing all legal procedures to begin construction on the first berths immediately. The city expects Lien Chieu Port to be a “magnet” for global shipping lines and logistics providers.

The Lien Chieu Port project represents the ambition of Da Nang to transcend its reputation as just a tourist destination and become a global industrial powerhouse. With its strategic location, massive investment, and partnership with international giants like APM Terminals, Lien Chieu is set to redefine the maritime landscape of Vietnam.

For investors and logistics companies, Lien Chieu Port is the name to watch as it prepares to anchor the future of Pacific trade.
