Vietnam’s maritime industry continues to strengthen its global position as two major Vietnam seaports secured places among the world’s top-performing container ports in 2025.
According to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, jointly released by the World Bank (WB) and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Cai Mep Port and Hai Phong Port were recognized among the Top 20 most efficient container ports worldwide.
Cai Mep and Hai Phong rise in global rankings
In the latest ranking, Cai Mep Port reached 11th place globally with 122 points, while Hai Phong Port ranked 13th, achieving the same score.
This achievement marks the second consecutive year that Vietnam’s port system has secured a place among the world’s leading container ports in operational efficiency, demonstrating consistent progress in infrastructure development and port management capabilities.
The recognition highlights the growing competitiveness of Vietnam seaports, which are increasingly positioned alongside major international maritime hubs. Beyond improving operational performance, the results reflect Vietnam’s expanding role in global shipping networks, stronger supply chain connectivity, and rising attractiveness as a destination for international trade and logistics investment.
Vietnam seaports outperform major regional competitors
The two Vietnamese ports ranked ahead of several well-known ports across Asia and the Middle East, including:
- Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia)
- Kaohsiung (Taiwan, China)
- Port Said (Egypt)
At the same time, they followed only a limited number of globally recognized ports such as Fuzhou, Dalian, Ningbo, Hong Kong (China), Salalah (Oman), and Kobe (Japan). This performance reflects Vietnam’s ongoing investment in port infrastructure, operational efficiency, and supply chain connectivity.
Growing cargo volume supports maritime expansion
According to statistics from Vietnam’s maritime authorities, total cargo throughput across Vietnam’s seaport and inland waterway system reached an estimated 546 million tons during the first five months of 2026, marking a 15% year-on-year increase. The growth reflects rising trade activity, stronger import and export demand, and the expanding role of Vietnam’s logistics network in regional and global supply chains.
This positive momentum has also translated into stronger financial performance across the maritime sector, highlighting the increasing efficiency and competitiveness of port and shipping operators. As cargo volumes continue to rise, businesses across the industry are benefiting from improved operational capacity and stronger market demand.
In Q1 2026, Vietnam National Shipping Lines (VIMC) reported revenue exceeding VND 6.61 trillion, representing growth of more than 76% compared to the same period last year. The company’s profit after tax surpassed VND 860 billion, doubling year-on-year and reflecting the recovery and expansion of maritime and logistics activities.
At the same time, Hai Phong Port JSC also delivered strong business results. Consolidated revenue reached nearly VND 745 billion, up 29% year-on-year, while after-tax profit increased by 90%, driven mainly by higher cargo handling volumes and stronger port operation performance.
The sustained growth in cargo throughput and business results highlights the increasing contribution of Vietnam’s maritime industry to economic development. It reinforces the country’s ambition to become a leading logistics and transportation hub in Asia.
Strengthening Vietnam’s position in global logistics
The continued rise of Vietnam seaports in international rankings demonstrates the country’s growing influence in global trade and supply chains. The strong performance of Cai Mep and Hai Phong reflects not only improvements in port operations but also Vietnam’s broader efforts to enhance logistics infrastructure, strengthen international connectivity, and support export-driven growth.
With ongoing investment in port expansion, digital transformation, and supply chain efficiency, cargo throughput across the country continues to increase. As infrastructure capacity and operational standards advance, Vietnam is reinforcing its position as one of Asia’s emerging maritime and logistics hubs while creating stronger links with regional and global markets.
