Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s economic hub, is accelerating infrastructure development with a focus on sustainable logistics and aviation. Recently, the Netherlands reaffirmed its commitment to partner with the city in building green ports and smart airports. This marks a strategic collaboration that uses Dutch expertise in port and airport management.
Modern Port Infrastructure
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City operates 98 port berths, handling over 330 million tons of cargo annually. Among them, the Cai Mep – Thi Vai port cluster is globally recognized. It ranks among the Top 10 most efficient container ports by the World Bank and S&P Global. This achievement demonstrates Vietnam’s leadership in Southeast Asian port development. Moreover, it highlights the importance of international cooperation in modernizing the logistics network.
Strategic Collaboration with the Netherlands
At a recent workshop hosted by the Netherlands Consulate General, city leaders and Dutch experts discussed key collaboration areas. They include:
-
Green ports development
-
Digitalized logistics systems
-
Adoption of the “Airport City” model from Amsterdam Schiphol for Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Long Thanh International Airport
This approach creates integrated logistics and aviation hubs that are environmentally friendly, technologically advanced, and capable of handling growing cargo and passenger demands.
Approximately 60% of Vietnam’s exports to Europe pass through Rotterdam. Therefore, learning from Dutch expertise can enhance competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and streamline supply chain operations. Dutch companies offer experience in smart port design, sustainable logistics, and airport city planning, which can be adapted to Vietnam’s growing transport infrastructure.
Digital Logistics and Sustainability
Comrade Nguyễn Văn Được, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, and Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, shakes hands with Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Aukje de Vries.
Comrade Nguyễn Văn Được, Member of the Party Central Committee and Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, met with Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Aukje de Vries to advance the partnership.
The cooperation focuses on digital logistics solutions. Ho Chi Minh City aims to modernize its supply chain using real-time tracking, smart warehouse management, and automated cargo handling. These innovations will reduce operational costs, improve efficiency, and support the city’s goal of becoming a regional logistics and air transport hub. Additionally, integrating green technologies aligns with Vietnam’s national strategy for sustainable urban and industrial development.
Climate Resilience and Renewable Energy
Dutch experts shared experience in flood management, water governance, and energy-efficient infrastructure. Ho Chi Minh City faces challenges related to climate change, including rising sea levels and flooding. As a result, international collaboration is essential. By combining Dutch expertise with local knowledge, the city can develop ports and airports that are efficient and environmentally sustainable. This reduces carbon footprints and promotes circular economy practices.
Leadership Insights
Mr. Bui Xuan Cuong, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted that the partnership with the Netherlands is a strategic step toward connecting Ho Chi Minh City with global trade hubs, especially Rotterdam. Joint projects will focus on both physical infrastructure, such as modernized ports and smart airports, and digital infrastructure for intelligent logistics systems. This dual approach ensures high growth while embracing sustainability and innovation.
