Hanoi Sets Ambition to Become the Northern Logistics Hub

Published on 05.12.25

Hanoi is accelerating its plan to become the northern logistics hub as the city aligns its development roadmap with Vietnam’s Logistics Strategy 2025–2035, with a vision to 2050. Despite global disruptions-from the COVID-19 pandemic to geopolitical tensions and supply chain instability-the capital’s logistics sector has maintained annual growth of 14–16%, reaffirming its leading role in the region.

Strong Logistics Growth Despite Global Challenges

During the national conference announcing Vietnam’s logistics strategy, Nguyen The Hiep, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, presented several strong performance indicators. Hanoi ranks fourth nationwide in the Provincial Logistics Competitiveness Index (LCI). Warehousing revenue rose sharply from VND 55,197 billion in 2019 to VND 82,007 billion in 2023.

With nearly 400 enterprises managing around 100 hectares of warehouse land, Hanoi’s logistics landscape remains fragmented. The city lacks large-scale regional logistics hubs—a key requirement for developing the Northern logistics network.

Key Logistics Projects Driving Regional Competitiveness

In recent years, Hanoi has developed several major logistics projects to strengthen its role as a gateway. Some notable developments include:

  • Hateco Logistics Center in Long Bien (12 ha)
  • VNPost Northern Operations Hub (6 ha)
  • Yen Vien railway logistics center (19 ha)
  • ICD projects in Hoai Duc, Gia Lam, Soc Son, and Phu Xuyen

Despite strong investment interest, several logistics projects face delays due to complex land clearance procedures, limited land availability, and the lack of special policy mechanisms essential for industrial-scale development.

Transport Connectivity Remains the Decisive Factor

To reinforce its position as the Northern logistics hub, Hanoi is upgrading core transport infrastructure. Investments include Ring Road 4, radial routes, new Red River bridges, and urban railway expansion.

Road transport continues to dominate the city’s logistics activities, while waterways and railways remain underdeveloped. Enhancing multimodal logistics is essential to reducing costs and improving efficiency.

In 2025, Hanoi will update its logistics master plan to align with the Capital Planning 2021–2030. The city aims to speed up logistics center development, advance e-logistics platforms, and complete a unified logistics enterprise database.

As Hanoi positions itself to become the Northern logistics hub, its efforts reflect a broader national mission: building a competitive, sustainable, and integrated logistics system that enhances Vietnam’s standing in global supply chains.
